How to Lower Your Electric Bill: What Actually Moves the Number

Start with the arithmetic. Your bill is roughly your usage in kWh times your utility's effective price, plus a fixed charge you cannot avoid. You cannot renegotiate the price (unless you live in a restructured state with supplier choice), so every legitimate saving comes from the usage side - and usage is wildly concentrated in a few end uses.

Set expectations with your utility's average

Before spending anything, look up your utility in the directory and compare your last 12 months of kWh with its average residential usage and bill. Households far above the average almost always have a fixable cause - dying HVAC, a well pump short-cycling, electric resistance backup heat running all winter. Households near the average chasing another 5% are shopping for pennies; the households at double the average are the ones with hundreds of dollars a year on the table. If high prices rather than usage are your problem, the context is in why prices vary by state - and the long-game answer there is rooftop solar, covered in our net metering guide.
