About FreeUtilityData
FreeUtilityData publishes the data that U.S. electric utilities are required to file with the Energy Information Administration - for every utility, in a readable form, free.
Utilities file Form EIA-861 every year: how many customers they serve, how much electricity they sell, what they charge on average, how reliable their service is, and how much customer solar sits on their system. Those filings are public, but the official tools for reading them are spreadsheets and analyst databases. This site turns the same filings into utility profiles, state pages and rankings.
What you can do here
- Look up any of the 3,199 electric utilities that reported retail sales in 2025 - investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, cooperatives, and state and federal power marketers.
- Compare the average price each utility's customers actually pay, by customer class, and see estimated average residential bills.
- Check reliability (outage minutes per customer) and rooftop-solar adoption utility by utility.
- Track five-year trends in customers, sales, revenue and rates, and follow monthly state prices between annual filings.
FreeUtilityData is informational only. An average realized rate describes a utility's filings, not the tariff any individual customer pays, and nothing here is a recommendation about any utility or service territory.
